Hip-Hop and R&B’s most aloof legend is back! Sort of.
Through her professionally personal tumblr, eight-time Grammy winner Lauryn Hill unwrapped a new track, titled “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)“. The timing and rushed release most likely had a lot to do with the former Fugees star’s impending tax evasion case where she is facing three years in prison.
Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!
Seems like the politics of the industry pressured her…again. The song comes after news broke of her recently signing a million-dollar contract with Sony.
As for the song itself, this is not the comeback that we hoped for. The fast-paced (this is understatement) lyrics, which sounds like several words mashed together to form one long word, tells a story of darkness, greed and corporate chains over a production that seems to go nowhere. It would have been nice if she took some breaths and added some spaces, commas and periods. Although truthful and honest, Ms. Hill slams the “system” that caused her to rebel against the industry years ago. Not quite sure if this will get her the coins to keep her out of jail but it’s something. It’s just not working for her.
Surely, we don’t expect exactly the same “Miseducation” Lauryn but we should continue to hold out hope that she accepts the concept of the industry and how it works so that we can have the greatness that once was. Maybe Lauryn is just getting somethings out of her system. And I don’t mean drugs…I hope.
The song is now available on iTunes.
